User Ratings and Reviews

1 Star Mind-numbingly bad
Remember when the Ultimate universe was actually a good idea? Remember when Mark Millar launched Ultimate X-Men and actually took the title and characters in new and powerful directions? Those days have been long gone, and ever since Millar took off from the title, Ultimate X-Men has declined in quality ever so steadily. After Robert Kirkman’s disappointing run on the title, Heroes writer Aron Coleite gets the scribe duties with Absolute Power, which turns the whole title into nothing more than a caricature of itself. Characters such as Wolverine, Nightcrawler, Colossus, and even Professor Xavier are nothing like what we have seen before, and the story here as a whole basically negates anything that’s come before as well. Not even Mark Brooks’ artwork can save this mind-numbingly bad tale. It’s no wonder that Marvel is canning Ultimate X-Men with Ultimatum on the horizon (which in truth, isn’t much better than what you’ll read here, but I digress), and it’s just a shame that such a once promising title has wound up like this. Avoid.

1 Star Terrible
This was the most non linear story line ever. This entire book was just pointless. One minute everyone is pissed only to be the best of friends a second later. The most worthless trade in the series to date. Feel free to skip it, your not missing anything.

1 Star Ruins everything
Remember when the Ultimate universe was cool? When they tried to take a more “realistic” view on things. do a slow burn and offer unique points of view on charachters and events from the main univers? yeah me too. unfourtunately, this TBP is the sign of the apocalypse to the Ultimate Universe and what its becomming (not the charachter). Story was terrible. made no sense, it was all about “hotshotting” events for the purpose of shock and buzz. Hopefully they find a way to retcon out of this. First start by firing the writter. Stick him on one of the milion mainstream X Books. It was a perfect story for that, not for Ultimate universe. A major disapointment. a definite “jump the shark” moment for Ultimate X-Men.

1 Star Horrible. Just Horrible
I’ve loved the Ultimate X-men series from the start, but this set makes me want to drop it and never read them again. Plenty of spoilers below!:

It’s like the author decided to WIPE AWAY all of the character progression that had happened in the past books, and forget about them. Nightcrawler had issues with Colossus being gay? No problem! 1 panel, and they’re friends again. Phoenix left after destroying Apocalypse? She’s back now! Nothing happened apparently. Northstar dies in a pretty inconsequential scene, for no real reason other than to piss Colossus off. Colossus is a powerful superhero? Not anymore! He now needs drugs to really do anything, otherwise he’s a worthless superhero.

Oh, and the preaching about drugs!! Ridiculous. Apparently, the same drug that Colossus has been taking since a child without any real side-effects will kill Northstar after one dose, and drive 5 other x-men into crazy junkies. The inconsistency of what the drug does was insane. There’s plenty of ‘just say no’ rhetoric about taking this drug, but they never explain why its bad to take it.

Oh, and guess where the drug comes from? Wolverine! Why? Who knows! Apparently Xavier has been keeping him holed up for lab testing, contrary to everything we’ve learned about that character from forever ago.

We’re told this author is one of the writers from ‘Heroes’. You know, the TV series about comic book characters written and acted by people that look down on comics? You can see the TV show’s same obsession with being ’special’ in this series. ‘I don’t want to be like everyone else! I’m specialllll!!!!’, just comes off as really pathetic (esp. when peter petrelli would say it every 10 minutes).

Basically, the author took a huge dump on the entire Ultimate X-men series, changing all kinds of characters into pointless and idiotic directions that lead nowhere interesting. The only way to salvage it really is to play the whole ‘it was all a dream!’ angle.
